Taj Mahal Guide
Places to Visit Near the Taj Mahal in Agra
Plan nearby visits to Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh, Itmad-ud-Daulah, Fatehpur Sikri and other heritage places around the Taj Mahal.
The Taj Mahal is the centrepiece of many Agra itineraries, but the city and surrounding district contain important Mughal sites that add historical context. A balanced plan avoids rushing between too many places and allows for traffic, security and seasonal weather.
Agra Fort
Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important Mughal forts in India. Its red sandstone walls enclose palaces, audience halls, mosques and later marble additions. The fort helps explain the political world in which the Taj Mahal was commissioned.
Mehtab Bagh
Mehtab Bagh lies across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal. The garden provides a different understanding of the monument’s riverfront setting and long-distance symmetry. Conditions and access can vary, so check local information before visiting.
Itmad-ud-Daulah
Often called the “Baby Taj,” the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah predates the Taj Mahal. Its white marble surfaces, geometric planning and inlay decoration make it valuable for understanding the development of Mughal funerary architecture.
Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra
Akbar’s tomb combines monumental gateways, gardens and a richly decorated mausoleum complex. It differs strongly from the Taj Mahal and illustrates changes in Mughal design across generations.
Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO-listed former Mughal capital outside Agra. Its palaces, courtyards, audience spaces and religious buildings reward at least several hours. Travel time means it should not be squeezed casually into a short city visit.
Taj Nature Walk
The Taj Nature Walk offers viewpoints toward the monument from a greener landscape near the eastern side of the complex. It can suit visitors who want a quieter perspective, though weather and maintenance conditions should be checked.
Planning Responsibly
Use licensed guides where a guide is needed, confirm transport prices before departure and avoid sellers who claim unofficial access. Carry water where permitted, protect yourself from heat and leave enough time to return before evening traffic intensifies.
